Louisiana Lawmakers Complain At Having To Make Do On $50 A Meal

Some Louisiana legislators are upset that a $50 per person cap on entertainment from lobbyists will infringe on their social life. One lawmaker suggested that capping the lobbyists to $50 would banish lobbying to Taco Bell. For $50 that is definitely more than your usual bean and cheese burrito.

“I probably went out several times — well, twice a week. I bet I haven’t been out to eat twice all session,” lamented state Senator Francis Thompson.

Some Lobbyists have said the $50 limit is only a problem when drinks are involved. The alternative has been to cut back on the alcohol or lobby legislators in group meal settings.

Not all is bad in the new austere setting. Lawmakers have found they have more time for legislative work and less for mooching off the lobbyists.
