Tobacco Soon To Be Illegal In Dutch Coffee Shops; Pot Still Legal.

Starting July 1, public tobacco smoking will be illegal in all restaurants and cafés in the Netherlands. Normally, that would not be unusually odd. Many jurisdictions throughout the world are banning tobacco where food is served. Netherlands has a twist though. In the Netherlands, coffee shops are more than just places for a cup of coffee and a little tobacco leaf. No, the other ubiquitous leaf of the world, marijuana is regularly rolled and smoked–legally. Dutch pot smokers like to cut the pure cannabis flavor by mixing it with tobacco. Unfortunately, the new law will not allow that. Coffee shop owners will face a stiff fine of $466 for every pot smoker who adulterates a joint with tobacco. Let us make that clear again. Smoke a joint in the Netherlands and all is fine. Mix in a little tobacco and you go afoul of the law. Dutch smokers will just have to get used to pure cannabis.
