A few days ago the bizarre campaign strategy of Brent Rinehart, Oklahoma County Commissioner hit the national news. For those unfamiliar with Rinehart, he is seeking re-election in next Tuesday’s Republican primary against two challengers.
In April, felony charges were brought against Rinehart for violating campaign finance laws during his 2004 race for County Commissioner. Rinehart has a court date in September.
Last week Rinehart’s campaign released a 16-frame comic book of his life. Rinehart says, “It’s more or less a story of my experiences of the last four years of being the county
commissioner of District 2.”
A comic book is an unusual campaign tactic. What gets interesting is what is inside the comic book. Satan is Rinehart’s enemy and an angel his ally. Rinehart slams his political enemies, such as state Attorney General Drew Edmundson, who brought the campaign violation charges against Rinehart, and Sheriff John Whetsel. Rinehart’s favorite targets are homosexuals. He has various figures dressed in unusual garb, including togas, and holding signs reading, “I Want To Be A Boy Scout Leader” or “We’re Here We’re Queer, Get Used To It.”
“The history of my office is that I do expose the homosexual agenda, and that it does exist in the state of Oklahoma, and my history also would show that I am very much opposed to the homosexual agenda,” Rinehart said.
Of course, he has to bring in the pedophiles too. They are against him as you might expect. Except Rinehart misspells the word — “pedifile.”
Throughout the comic, Rinehart says he has stood up to the “liberal good ol’ boys”. County Assessor Leonard Sullivan, a fellow Republican, said he does not know who the “liberal good ol’ boys” are. “I’ve really encouraged him on more than one occasion to get professional help. He really needs it,” said Sullivan.
During a CNN interview, Rinehart was asked if he was homophobic. Rinehart quickly replied. “Well, I’m not even sure to what homophobic means, but let us just keep in mind we are in a cultural war not just here in Oklahoma, but nationwide.”
Rinehart is also taking heart from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Fraternal Order of Police. They cast a vote of “no confidence” in him. Rinehart’s comic book also refers to equipment that the Sheriff’s Department sought as “toys.”
The latest polls for Tuesday’s Republican primary have Rinehart losing with just 19.5 of the vote in a three-way race. Keep in mind Rinehart is the incumbent and this is the Republican primary.
