Turkish Courts Asked To Shut Ruling Party Down

Turkey’s Chief Prosecutor is seeking to remove the leadership of the ruling party. Turkey, a Muslim country, with stringent secular requirements in its constitution, has faced a strident debate over Sharia law.

Prosecutor Abdurraham Yalcinkaya is charging that the Justice and Development Party (AKP) is trying to impose anti-secular laws on the state. Yalcinkaya’s main argument is the proposed relaxation of laws banning Islamic headscarves.

He is seeking the Prime Minister, President and 69 party members to be banned from politics.

The AKP calls the action an attack on democracy. The AKP won the last election by a landslide.

The European Union is also concerned as Turkey attempts to join it. The EU believes matters like this should be left to the ballot box and not the courts.
