Megalomaniac? Yes, that might describe California state Senator Carol Migden. Migden, who was the first incumbent California legislator to be defeated from within her own primary in 12 years, was heard screaming at her staff on Thursday. Enedina Hidalgo, the director of personnel for the state Senate, happened to walk by Migden’s office as she was verbally assaulting her staff. After Migden left, Hidalgo came into the office to inform the staff of their rights and assist them out of the office. Migden’s staff was not present Thursday as phone calls went unanswered and mail not picked up. State staffers filled her office on Friday.
Migden was challenged from within her own party primarily because of character issues. She has a long history of controversial behavior, especially with staff related matters. Some consider her unreasonably demanding and volatile.
Previously, Migden was fined $350,000 by the Fair Political Practices Commission for campaign violations.
Last year, she pleaded no contest to misdemeanor reckless driving charges after driving erratically for 30 miles, hitting the center divider and rear-ending another car. Migden blamed the incident on a prescription medicine.
It is doubtful if many will miss Migden after her term expires this year. The few who do are not likely to be her staffers.
