Senator Larry Craig’s bathroom solicitation for gay sex was the overwhelming selection as the worst political sex scandal of the last year according to a Foolocracy.com online poll. Craig received 44% of the votes, easily outdistancing former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer and former Presidential contender John Edwards. The results were accumulated from an online poll available to over 5,000 visitors who came to the website in the last week.
Spitzer, who resigned from office after a sting operation caught him with a prostitute, ran a surprisingly strong 30%. Edwards, who recently admitted to an extramarital affair, received only 11%. Edwards was almost caught by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick who received 9%. Kilpatrick made the news in the last week when he was jailed and ordered to wear a GPS ankle bracelet after violating his bail conditions. Kilpatrick has been embroiled in several scandals over the last year that began when he perjured himself over text messages and an affair he had with his former chief-of-staff.
Former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann, who resigned after an extramarital affair and numerous sexual harassment charges arose in his office, received 4%. No other politician received over 1%.
Perhaps the most surprising result was how poorly Edwards ran after his affair received enormous publicity in the last weeks. The results suggest that an extramarital affair, even by a former Presidential candidate, is not as significant as it once was. Spitzer’s sex scandal was also an extramarital affair, but it was enhanced by the involvement of a prostitution ring. Neither could top Idaho Senator Larry Craig. Even a year after soliciting for gay sex in an airport’s men’s room, Craig’s scandal remained unmatched. There were many side stories to it as well. Craig’s foot-tapping secret signals, and his excuse that it was the fault of his “wide stance” stretched all bounds of credulity.
