Ralph Nader has finally found a way to get onto the Oregon ballot. Nader, who pulled 5% in Oregon during his 2000 race for the Presidency, was denied ballot access in 2004. He blamed Democrats for preventing him from getting on the ballot then. This time Nader supporters used a little subterfuge.

Nader supporters formed a new political party, the Oregon Peace Party, and gathered enough signatures to get on the ballot. Voters who signed a petition for the party were not told that the party was formed for Nader’s benefit. The voters were only told that the party would nominate a peace candidate.

Once the party organizers were informed that enough signatures had been gathered to qualify the party, three people registered with the party met within hours to nominate Nader.

“The procedure was necessitated because we have been sabotaged in the past,” said Portland lawyer Greg Kafoury, a primary organizer of the party.
