Oregon’s Republican Senator Gordon Smith is still running ads touting his bipartisan work with Democrats. A month ago, Foolocracy posted an ad by Gordon Smith that claimed he worked with Barack Obama. Smith exaggerated the collaboration in that ad, but must have found it worked as he now has a new ad with the same theme.
This time Smith is claiming he worked with Obama and John Kerry. Surprisingly, he claims credit for opposing Bush on Medicaid cuts. Smith sounds like a Democrat, but he still looks like a Republican. To Smith’s credit, he is not completely distorting his record. Although he has a 72% rating with the American Conservative Union, he is one of the more moderate Republican Senators.
It remains a very odd thing to see a Republican running for re-election and emphasizing his relationship with the other party’s presumptive nominee for President. Add that Smith throws in a working relationship with the last standard-bearer of the Democrats, John Kerry, ignores Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, and it wants to make you shake your head in disbelief. Despite the friendly Obama ads, Smith remains a National Campaign Committee member for McCain, who he has endorsed for President. Although, you will not see that in a Smith ad. However, the real clincher is Smith trying to put distance between himself and Bush. Smith’s ad is almost a tacit endorsement of Obama. It is indeed very unusual. Increasingly, it looks like Bush is uniting the country in unexpected ways.
You can see the ad here.
