There are reports that the Bush administration is taking steps to implement a massive internet surveillance project. The project, labeled “Einstein”, was initially developed as a security intrusion detection system for federal computer systems. It quickly became a monitor for email and web surfing of federal employees.
In February 2008, Einstein was placed under the control of the National Security Administration. Although it is promoted as conducting traffic analysis on government websites, it is being fitted to analyze the message content of texts. Classified plans are being made to extend Einstein into the surveillance of the .com, .edu, .int, .org and other Internet domains.
