A new AP-Yahoo poll suggests that race is playing a factor in the Presidential race. Barack Obama is only receiving support from 70% of non-Hispanic white Democrats. In comparison, John McCain has the support of 85% of non-Hispanic white Republicans.
Using a sophisticated system involving interviews with people online after randomly selecting and screening them over telephone, the poll sought to compensate for polltakers that are hesitant to express embarrassing decisions such as racism.
Although for the majority of voters race was not a factor, it did influence a small percentage of Democrat and Independent voters who would normally vote Democratic. The poll determined that Obama’s support could be 6% greater than it currently reads in polls if race was not a factor. Race also influenced Republicans, but the poll determined policy differences affected their decision not to vote for Obama even more.
