Italy Cracks Down On Olive Oil Counterfeiters

Italy is cracking down on counterfeiters. No, this crackdown is not on counterfeiters of the lire, but counterfeiters of olive oil.

Earlier this year, Italy was rocked when 39 people were arrested and more than 25,000 liters of counterfeit extra virgin oil impounded.

Now, Italian authorities have announced that 20 members of the anti-food piracy unit have been trained to locate counterfeit virgin olive oil by taste.

“This initiative will strengthen the defense of the quality of one of the symbols of the Mediterranean diet,” Unaprol head Massimo Gargano said.

In Italy, some things should not be messed with.
