A Massachusetts state Senator with a long history of legal entanglements has been arrested for taking bribes in a money-for-legislative-influence sting.
Democrat Diane Wilkerson was caught on camera stuffing $100 bills into her bra.
Altogether, Wilkerson took $23,500 in bribes in the string operation.
“She has a long history of acting as if she was above the law,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney John McNeil.
Wilkerson has been a member of the state Senate for 15 years. She lost in this year’s primary, but sought to keep her seat with a sticker campaign.
The Massachusetts Bar has begun proceedings to take away her law license after she perjured herself in court for her nephew, a convicted murderer.
In August, she paid a $10,000 fine and erased $30,000 in debts that she claimed her campaign committee owed her after admitting that she did not keep accurate records in the 2000 and 2004 campaigns.
She also spent time in a halfway house for federal tax evasion.
In the sting, she is accused of pressuring the Boston licensing board for more liquor licenses for her district and stalling legislation for an increase in salaries for the licensing board.
She is free on a $50,000 bail.
