Former state Senator Diane Wilkerson of Massachusetts returned to her old office at the statehouse and began dumping piles of paperwork. Wilkerson, who resigned last week, is facing bribery charges for receiving $23,500 in a federal sting operation.
Senate President Therese Murray heard of Wilkerson’s arrival and had her removed from her old office. Wilkerson is under court order not to throw out any papers.
Her lawyer, Max Stern, discounted the concerns that information relevant to the prosecution would be tossed out.
“She hasn’t thrown out anything that the FBI won’t look through,” said Stern, adding that investigators will sort through the material in the bins. “There is a whole procedure set up. They’re looking through everything.”
After reviewing Wilkerson’s financial records, a judge recently ruled that she was broke and appointed Stern as her court appointed attorney. The judge sealed Wilkerson’s financial affairs to prevent public release, but noted that when she submitted her forms she failed to swear that the information was truthful. She has been asked to resubmit those forms with that correction.
