Greenland Votes For Greater Autonomy

Greenland is moving closer to becoming a full-fledged country. Its residents voted 76% to 24% to seek greater autonomy from Denmark. They also voted to make Greenlandic the official language instead of Danish.

Greenland has been semi-autonomous since 1979. Now Greenland will control its lucrative natural resources and exert greater control over police and judicial matters.

As the earth warms, the ice cap that covers four-fifths of the island is receding. That is allowing more natural resources to be exploited. Nearly 90% of the island’s people are Inuits. The rest are almost all Danes.
