The Mormon church has been at the spearhead of the anger by Propositon 8 opponents over California’s rejection of Proposition 8. While over $20 million was contributed by Mormons to pass the measure, church officials have denied that they did anything directly.
Californians Against Hate filed a complaint with California’s Fair Political Practices Commission four days after the election. The complaint alleges that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints organized phone banks from Utah and Idaho and sent direct mail to voters.
Roman Porter, executive director of the state Fair Political Practices Commission, announced that it would investigate the complaint.
“At this point, the commission hasn’t made any determination relative to wrongdoing or any individual’s culpability in matters raised by the complaint,” said Porter.
If the commission finds the Mormon church guilty of participating in campaigns, it can be fined $5,000 per violation. Such a ruling can have other, even more dramatic effects on the church. Besides the negative publicity, the IRS could investigate the church’s tax-exempt status.
