State Sells Surplus File Cabinet…Oops, Forgets To Remove Files

In North Carolina, the Department of Health and Human Services decided to get rid of some surplus items.

One of the items was a filing cabinet. Fortunately, for the state, it had an honest buyer.

It seems that someone left 57 client files inside.

The file cabinet buyer notified the state of his find. The state has since reviewed about 20 of the files. Two had personal information and one had a Medicaid number. The newest files were from the 1990′s.

A spokesperson for the DHHS said the office that the files came from had moved a few times. Somewhere along the way, the file cabinet was removed to the surplus area. Apparently, no one bothered to check to see if anything was inside.

This incident follows another one a few weeks ago when a DHHS computer was stolen. It contained tens of thousands of employees’ social security numbers.
