Val Kilmer is considering a race for Governor in New Mexico, but not against Bill Richardson. Richardson is high on the list of several possible positions in the Obama administration, including Secretary of State.
If Richardson takes a position, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish would assume the governorship. Richardson and Denish have had a rocky relationship. It is not surprising that Richardson is encouraging Kilmer. However, Kilmer has to improve on his political language. He might be fine reading a script, but he bungled at expressing his interest to being governor.
“I know I’m not yet qualified for the job. It’s not like I need fame. If that’s what it’s all about, I wouldn’t live in New Mexico. But I don’t want to be a train wreck. I have to see if people will put up the money for my run. I have to think about putting my acting on hold. Being famous as a movie actor is one thing, but they take no prisoners in politics. I have to think what this might do to my kids.”
I can just see that statement in a thirty-second sound bite from his opponent.
That is not all the baggage cluttering Kilmer’s political ambitions.
Prior to last week, Kilmer, a registered Democrat, has never voted in New Mexico. He has lived in the state since 1992.
Kilmer has also been quoted with some outrageous remarks about New Mexico. He once said that he lives “in the homicidal capital of the Southwest” and that “80 percent of the people in my county are drunk.”
That might just be the best way he will get their vote too - if they are drunk.
Kilmer next plans to talk to Arnold Schwarzenegger about politics.
