Fossella Ordered To Pay Back Campaign Funds Spent On Legal Defense

Vito Fossella, the disgraced Congressman from Staten Island, kept his campaign committee going long after he withdrew from his reelection quest last May.

Fossella was arrested for drunk driving in May, but left jail with a woman other than his wife. It was later revealed that he had a secret family in Washington, D.C. and a public one in Staten Island.

After Fossella resigned, he continued to accept contributions to his campaign fund. He also continued to spend the money, including thousands on his drunken driving defense.

The Federal Elections Commission got wind of Fossella’s actions and ordered him to $136,000 by October 20.

Fossella’s campaign committee said that the “refund process will be substantially complete by December 12.”
