The final results are in from the Presidential election. It may have taken 6 weeks, but finally every last ballot has been counted, unless you consider the ones missing in the Minnesota Senate race, but no one is contesting the Presidential vote there, so let’s just forget about that.
A record-breaking 131 million voted on November 4. In 2004, the total was 122 million. The turnout was 61.6%. That was the highest turnout since 1968.
The election of 1968 was the height of the Vietnam War and Civil Rights movement when Richard Nixon squared off against Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace.
The news gets even better as this was the third straight election with an increase in turnout.
Voter apathy, which once dominated American politics, appears on the way out. The internet, popularization of politics and historic nature of the 2008 election all have contributed to this increase.
