There is no suspense to this week’s “Fool of the Week” award. The details of Governor Rod Blagojevich’s arrest are extraordinary even by the low ethical standards normally associated with Illinois politics.
Blagojevich’s obscenity-loaded comments reveal a politician completely engulfed in a world of personal favors and quid pro quo. Blagojevich is the perfect example that power does corrupt.
For performing his official duties, he expected a $50,000 contribution from a hospital and the firing of critical Chicago Tribune editors. Yet the most lurid tale is Blagojevich’s attempted sale of Barack Obama’s former Senate seat. He treated it as personal property available for his own disposal as he saw fit.
U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald described Blagojevich’s behavior, “the most staggering crime spree in office I have ever seen.”
That sums it up.
