L’Indépendante, a new beer in Quebec, is not bouncing off the shelves. “Separatist” beer hit the market in October with the intent to raise money for the separatist cause in the province.
A group of 22 investors contributed $22,000 to the idea with hopes of selling 100,000 bottles a month. In October, they sold a disappointing 38,000.
“People who drink it will be posing a political gesture,” Jacques Leduc, one of the investors, said when the beer hit the stores. “It would be a symbol of a people who want a country.”
Some people have said it tastes “neutral.” The promotional material announces L’Indépendante: “It’s the taste of freedom.”
There is no word yet if the shortfall in sales is blamed on the beer or the cause, but a recent poll among voters in Quebec ranked secession as 14th out of 15 issues.
