When Laura Bush asked the members of Congress to have artists from their districts send in a handcrafted ornament for the national Christmas tree, she probably was not expecting what Deborah Lawrence sent her.
Lawrence was asked by Congressman Jim McDermott to design an ornament.
McDermott, a Democrat, is not one of George Bush’s biggest fans. In fact, McDermott supported a resolution to impeach the President.
Lawrence is not a fan of Bush either, so she made the ornament with a protest message. She highlighted McDermott’s efforts to impeach the President by embedding tiny text on the nine-inch ornament.
When the White House found out about it, they declined to place the ornament on the tree. According to the Washington Post:
Sally McDonough, a spokeswoman for the first lady, confirmed the ornament would not be displayed. “It’s inappropriate and it’s not being hung,” she said. She said that when asked about the issue yesterday, the White House tree decorations were not complete. “We reviewed the ornament along with all the (other) ornaments, and Mrs. Bush deemed it inappropriate for the holiday tree.”
“This doesn’t really surprise me. But it’s disappointing that I won’t get to see it on the tree,” said Lawrence.
