IRS Sends Man Bill For 5 Cents, Then Offers Refund For 4 Cents

Internal Revenue ServiceThe IRS is hard at work collecting on debt-beat taxpayers…or generously trying to refund hard-working Americans.

That all depends on how you want to take two letters received by Detroit lawyer James Howarth.

Howarth first got a letter demanding payment for five cents owed. He was warned that additional penalties or interest might be incurred if he delayed.

Then Howarth got a letter saying that the government owed him four cents. However, because it was under one dollar, he would have to request it.

Howarth tried to call an 800 number, but gave up after waiting a lengthy time.

An IRS spokesman said he had nothing to add, as the IRS doesn’t comment on individual accounts.

For Howarth, it looks like he still owes a penny. And interest is accruing.
