darwin_apeAn Oklahoma State Senate bill proposed by Randy Brogdon would require educators to critique and find alternatives to scientific controversies.

Sounds like a great idea, right?

Not exactly. The “Scientific Education and Academic Freedom” act specifically states its purpose is to:

“assist teachers to find more effective ways to present the science curriculum where it addresses scientific controversies” and permit teachers to “help students understand, analyze, critique, and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories pertinent to the course being taught.”

The problem is that the only scientific issues mentioned as controversial are “biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming, and human cloning.”

In other words, it is not about academic freedom, but political agendas. This bill is the first bill of the new year to undermine generally accepted scientific theories.
