Mexico’s battle against its drug lords may be doomed to failure because of low salaries. The police are already infiltrated and corrupted by the drug lords, now the army is at risk.
Mexico sent in one of its most respected institutions, the army as a last ditch effort, but desertions are rampant. The reason is simple: the average soldier makes very little, but as a bodyguard for a drug lord, he can make a decent living.
Mexico has 40,000 soldiers deployed in its domestic war against drugs, but in the last six years, 150,000 soldiers have deserted. The average soldier makes about $200 a month and has skills prized by the drug lords.
This is a disturbing trend. If Mexico loses control of its army, it’s through. The complications for the U.S. are unimaginable at that point.
