- Libertarian Eric Sundwall, a candidate for New York’s twentieth Congressional district, was disqualified a week before the special election. Even though he gathered over 7,000 signatures, only 2,944 were deemed valid after supporters of the Republican Party candidate challenged his petition. Sundwall’s signers were registered voters, but most failed to properly write their names.
- The economy shrank 6.3% in the last quarter of 2008.
- Newt Gingrich said the U.S. is moving “towards a political dictatorship.” Aw, I just think he’s jealous that he’s not the one in charge.
- A 7-7 deadlock with the Texas State Board of Education averted social conservatives from requiring that the “weaknesses” of evolution be taught alongside it. Evolution supporters said this was an attempt to bring religion into the science classroom.
- House Republicans released their alternative budget…without details. At least it was a nice press conference. I wonder if the food was good afterwards…
- The Obama administration is starting to look like the Bush administration in some ways. They are making some of the same claims about “state secrets” that Barack Obama criticized in the Bush administration.
- Afghanistan is becoming more of an American war and less a NATO one. By the end of the year, two-thirds of the 90,000 foreign soldiers will be American.
- The Alaskan Senate has changed Groundhog Day to Marmot Day in Alaska.
