Bachman Warns Of “Reeducation Camps For Young People”

Michele Bachman is at it again. Now she is dreaming up things about the Serve America Act. She is expressing her opposition to some who want to implement “mandatory” participation in the program. Fair enough. Although, the bill under consideration does not require mandatory participation. Yes, it is true that some people think that all young people should spend some time serving their country in the AmeriCorps, military or similar service-oriented agency.

Of course, when we had the draft, we had mandatory participation as well. This bill only triples the number of volunteers in national service programs, like AmeriCorps. Hint to Michele Bachman: notice the word “volunteers.”

Opposing mandatory participation is fine, but it is the reasoning behind Bachman’s thinking that is outrageous.

Bachman imagines that there are going to be “reeducation camps for young people.” She has the vision of something like the Hitler Youth. Only in this case, I suppose it is the Obama Youth.

I wonder if she really believes this stuff or just uses it for publicity fodder. Either way, these exaggerations, delusions or whatever they are border on being simply dangerous.

Here are the Senate and House versions of the bill.
