McCain: “Sure” Resigning Is Leadership

This is the first time that I’ve ever heard that resigning is leading. When I looked up leadership in dictionary.com, I got these definitions:

1. the position or function of a leader: He managed to maintain his leadership of the party despite heavy opposition.
2. ability to lead: She displayed leadership potential.
3. an act or instance of leading; guidance; direction: They prospered under his leadership.
4. the leaders of a group: The union leadership agreed to arbitrate.

Did you notice that the first definiton of leadership stresses “maintain…leadership?’ It seems hard to find how resignation would fit under any of these categories, unless it was meant comically.

The other interesting part of this interview with John McCain is that he doesn’t think that running for an office with a set term is a “promise” to the voters to finish out that term.
