Death Panels In California?

Ear_surgery_on_a_patientIn case you are worried about federal “death panels” deciding who will live and who will die under a health care reform bill, California is way ahead of the curve.

According to the California Nurses Association, insurers denied 21% of claims from 2002 to 2009, even those approved by a physician.

The trend is not decreasing. On the contrary, more claims are routinely being rejected. In the first six months of 2009, the denials are much higher. Here is the breakdown by insurer: PacifiCare, 39.6 percent; Cigna, 32.7 percent; HealthNet, 30 percent; Kaiser Permanente, 28.3 percent; Blue Cross, 27.9 percent; Aetna, 6.4 percent.

While the health care debate rages, the facts are distorted. There does not seem to be a lot of difference between the way federally run health care system may operate and the major insurers, unless your private carrier is Aetna.
