A Dutch journalist asks German Chancellor Angela Merkel about her appointment of Wolfgang Schäuble from Interior Ministry to the Finance Ministry.
Why all the laughs and smirks from journalists and panel members?
Well, it just so happens that Schäuble took an illegal campaign donation of $100,000 ten years ago and claimed that he forgot about it in the drawer of his desk.
The journalist asked Merkel how she could trust the finances of 82 million Germans with someone who has such a forgetful memory. A not too happy Merkel says that she has faith in Schäuble. The journalist continued to pound Merkel for an answer before she finally said that she won’t talk about the matter anymore.
Forgetting about $100,000 cash in a desk drawer is just about the lamest political excuse I’ve ever heard. What a guy to have in charge of finances during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
