I have a hunch this mayor is no fun.
Mayor Tom Wilson of Nuneaton and Bedworth, England, refused to judge a pumpkin contest at Halloween because it “glamorizes evil.”
Wilson apologized for snubbing the children but called Halloween “the darker side of life.”
“It glorifies Satan’s angels and celebrates the dark side. Halloween is a pagan festival. I don’t think it’s appropriate to involve youngsters in this sort of thing,” Wilson said.
He got the pagan thing right, but fall festivals go back to the dawn of human civilization. It has not destroyed civilization yet.
Sonya Wilson, the mayor’s wife and a town councilor herself, supported her husband.
“We feel strongly about the potential dangers of letting youngsters become involved in it. We never encouraged our own children to join any Halloween activities because it’s unhealthy.”
“The Bible says not to believe in other idols and Halloween is all about promoting Satan. There is a risk that it could lead to other things like an interest in the occult and witchcraft, it’s like encouraging young people to drink beer,” said Mrs. Wilson.
Encourage young people to drink beer? I notice she did not say anything bad about older people drinking beer.
I have to hand it to the Wilsons though. They have been able to weave a line tying pumpkin carving, Satan and beer into one evil glamorization. Surprisingly, she did not mention anything about sex, but I am sure Satan’s working on it for next Halloween.
Clive Stringer, the town’s Deputy Mayor, stepped in to handle the task of judging the evil pumpkins.
As far as I’m concerned it’s just a bit of fun for the kids. I was brought up as a Christian but I don’t see anything wrong with children dressing up as witches and wizards and making faces out of pumpkins.
Just look out for that one that has Satan’s face.
