The Somalia terrorist group al-Shabaab, which has close ties to al-Qaeda, has banned ringtones on cell phones in the areas it control in southern Somalia.
This is part of an attempt to impose their version of Islamic law. Al-Shabaab already runs sharia law courts that impose floggings and amputations on those who violate its edicts.
Besides the ringtones, other banned activities include movies, dancing, soccer and anything else that brings pleasure without a religious connection.
“We do not tolerate anything that may corrupt the people. We don’t allow anything that goes against our religion, especially music and sexy videos,” said al-Shabaab’s spokesman Sheikh Hassan Yaqub.
Definitely not the guy you want to invite for a party.
“Al Shabaab wants our ringtones to be only a Muslim cleric reading the Hadith or Koranic verse,” said a Somali resident who used to listen to Bollywood songs.
One man was given 25 lashes for listening to music and watching videos on his phone. He was accused of rejecting religion.
Al-Shabaab is believed to have trained and fought with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and seen its membership expand dramatically since 2006. It is also considered a threat for a terrorist attack on the United States. Al-Shabaab was even able to gather recruits from Minnesota and send them into battle into Somalia. Which opens up the obvious threat for concern: What happens if some of them stay in the U.S. to do their deeds?
