Bolivian Government To Produce “Coca Colla” — It’s The Real Thing From Coca Leaves

cocamoralesBolivian President Evo Morales announced that his government will come out with a carbonated drink called “Coca Colla.” Yes, it will be made from coca leaves.

Billed as an energy drink, it will appear slightly similar to Coca Cola in packaging with a red label and black swoosh. Morales hopes to produce the drink in a joint venture with a private company.

Bolivia’s new constitution recognizes coca as a “cultural heritage, a natural and renewable resource of biodiversity in Bolivia and a factor of social cohesion.”

Morales is known to regularly chew on coca leaves, even when he appears at international conferences around the world.

cocacollaThe drink is part of a campaign to expand coca production from 12,000 hectares to 20,000.

How will the better known Coca Cola respond? The trademark infringement will be interesting. The “Colla” is not just a play off the better known soft drink’s name, but a name that many indigenous Bolivians are known by.

The original Coca Cola was actually made with cocaine, as everyone already knows. I wonder if they still have the patent, although by now it should have expired.
