Media Fails To Accurately Report Malawi “Gay” Marriage Prison Sentence

Malawi’s sentencing of a gay couple to 14 years in prison for attempting to become engaged has created a backlash of international criticism. Africa remains a highly homophobic continent. Last year, attempts were made to criminalize homosexuality in Uganda with the death penalty as a potential punishment.

With the attention on Malawi, the country is attempting to buck western opinion against the harsh sentence. The sentence has been justified as a defense of Malawi’s morality.

One of the surprising facts is that both Malawi and the international media have conveniently ignored that the imprisonment is not of two gay men but a man and a transgendered woman.

Some will not see a difference in this. However, the difference is not subtle. Even Iran allows transgendered operations and marriages while denying that homosexuality exists. That Malawi officials cannot see the distinction puts them further into the medieval ages than the narrow-minded, anachronistic mullahs of Iran.

The video is from a protest in Cape Town, South Africa, over the prison sentence, proving that not all of Africa has closed its eyes to this travesty.
