A heckler interrupted Maine Governor Paul LePage by exhorting him to “tax the rich.” LePage responded:
“I would love to tax the rich if we had any in Maine.”
In 2006, 8,000 residents of Maine had a worth of $1.5 million or more. That was 0.6% of the population. That place Maine at a higher percentage of wealthy or the same percentage of wealthy as 29 other states. While wealth of $1.5 million may not qualify as “rich” in most people’s minds, it does not mean the same in high income states like Hawaii and California. $1.5 million will buy a lot more in Maine.
Obviously, there are a few people in Maine with a lot more than $1.5 million in wealth.
