At one time, Idaho state Senator John McGee was considered a future gubernatorial candidate. After a year of turmoil, he has suddenly resigned over new allegations of sexual harassment with a state capitol employee. The details are not known, but McGee has had a highly public and troubling time since last June.
Last June, McGee was found asleep in a stolen Ford Excursion with a cargo trailer attached while in the front yard of a stranger. McGee’s alcohol level was twice the legal limit. He said that he had blacked out earlier in the evening. McGee was convicted of a DUI on a plea bargain that erased the auto theft charges.
Months later, McGee was further embarrassed when it was discovered that he was claiming a $122 per diem housing reimbursement from the legislature despite living only 26 miles away. The per diem payment was intended to ease the cost of a second home for the state legislators.
McGee’s resignation comes after the threat of a possible inquiry by the Senate into the sexual harassment charges which McGee denies.
