Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman, who has authored a bill blaming child abuse and neglect on unmarried parents, is now claiming that women lie about their pregnancies. Grothman also charged that women are becoming pregnant to get government benefits. Grothman charged that women can “live very comfortably” on these benefits.
In this interview with Fox’s Alan Colmes, Grothman responded that out-of-wedlock births are not accidents, but planned. He goes onto charge that women intentionally mislead or even lie about their pregnancies.
“I think when you have an epidemic of this great proportion, people are not so dumb that it’s surprising when they get pregnant. I think people are trained to say that ‘this is a surprise to me,’ because there’s still enough of a stigma that they’re supposed to say this.”
Colmes tried to suggest the availability of contraceptives as a cure for the unwanted pregnancies but Grothman dismissed that.
The real issue here is that sex is more culturally acceptable outside of marriage than before. Liberals, like Colmes, argue that needs to be accepted as a fact and solutions like widely available contraceptives need to be considered. Conservatives, like Grothman, want to turn back culture to a time when sex was only considered during marriage.
Despite Grothman’s assertions that liberals advocate social engineering, conservatives, like himself, are doing the same thing by wanting to change people’s values.
Government can be effective at changing those values in a culture. The Taliban is an excellent example of that, with burqas and the suppression of women’s rights. To make those changes it takes an overbearing government to do it. Grothman will never admit that, though.
The above comment is at the 8:45 mark in the video, but the entire interview is entertaining.
