The Last Days of Hugo Chavez?

Hugo Chavez may not lose the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela. As the incumbent, he has a lot of political machinery at his control. However, his health is a different story. He has been fighting cancer for the last year but few details have been revealed. What little is said is that he is recovering but he keeps going back to Cuba for treatments. Things may have just taken a turn for the worse.

Chavez returned to Venezuela from a recent visit to his Cuban doctors and is now headed to Brazil. Reports say that he suffered intestinal burns from radiation treatment in Cuba for an abdominal tumor. Some suggest that he is heading to the hospital in Sirio e Libanês in Sao Paulo, where Brazilian President’s Dilma Rouseff, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Paraguay’s Fernando Lugo have been treated for cancer.

At a brief Good Friday stop in Venezuela, Chavez made some interesting comments where he prayed for God to let him live longer.

“Give me your crown, Christ. Give it to me as I bleed, a hundred crosses, that I carry it, but give me life. Don’t take me away yet, give me your thorns, give me your blood, that I am willing to carry it, but with life, Christ, my lord. Amen.”

It is a clear indication that things are grim when the patient turns his attention from the doctors to God.

It is terrible to see anyone suffer, but Chavez has been a polarizing force in Venezuela. Live or die, it is better for Venezuelan democracy that the authoritarian Chavez is out of power.

Here are Chavez’s comments in Spanish.
