Health Reform Still a BFD

For $30, you can get your own from the Obama campaign.

This takes a little luster off of presidential campaigns and the presidency. Imagine FDR touting the New Deal:

“I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new BFD deal for the American people.”

Better yet, FDR could have just called his programs the BFD instead of the New Deal. Or how about JFK:

My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your BFD country.

Lincoln:

Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new BFD nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

At least the President is not using BFD in his speeches. It is not even Barack Obama who is responsible for tying BFD to health reform. That is Joe Biden.

In the scope of all things before us, this is small potatoes. Yet I still can’t imagine another president using a slogan like this for reelection. Perhaps, Richard Nixon might, but that would be only as a dirty trick on his opponent.
