It is now clear that Kim Jong-un is changing the policies of his father, although those changes may only apply to the younger Kim himself.

Ten years ago, Kim took a liking to North Korean pop star Hyon Song-wol. Kim Jong-il did not approve and banned the couple from seeing each other. In the ensuing years, Hyon married and had a child…and, then, the elder Kim died. The younger Kim had not forgotten his old love so less than a year after burying the old man, Kim has brought his old girlfriend back.

What of her husband and child? They were probably told that they would never see Hyon again. If they did not like it, then there was one of the notorious political prison camps in their future. Perhaps Hyon worked out a deal where her husband and child were going to live well as long as they stayed out of sight. One thing for certain is that the new Supreme Leader was not going to try to woo his love from her husband. In North Korea, the Supreme Leader always takes what he wants.

Hyon was once part of the famous Bochonbo Electronic Music Band. Oh, you haven’t heard of them? That is because you would have to live in North Korea where the outside world is shut from your ears, food is scarce and pop music is patriotic songs about serving the country.

Hyon had numerous chart-topping hits like “Footsteps of Soldiers,” “I Love Pyongyang,” “She is a Discharged Soldier” and “We are Troops of the Party.” Controlling the urge to dance to these tunes is relatively easy since they are about subjugating oneself to the state, defending North Korea from imperialists or working harder.

Hyon also had the enormous hit “Excellent Horse-Like Lady.” No, that is not about looking like a horse, it is about working like a horse.

Do I sense a new hit coming to North Korea? “Excellent Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un?” It is a guaranteed best seller. Everyone would rush to buy a copy or be shipped to a lifetime of forced labor.

I’m not positive, but I think the main character in the video is Hyon.
