Michele Bachmann is known for her gaffes, misstatements and factual errors. She just added another to her history of mistakes, and this one is baffling. Bachmann asserts that Barack Obama is out of touch with the average American because he is “extremely wealthy.” With that in mind she urges voters to support Mitt Romney.
“President Obama is extremely wealthy. He and his wife have been wealthy for a number of years, and so I think that’s really the issue. President Obama is wealthy — what does he understand about the common man right now?”
Obama is estimated to have a net worth of about $7.3 million. That is comfortable, but hardly “extremely wealthy.”
Romney is worth around $250 million. He is one of the richest candidates to seek the office of the presidency. Romney also grew up in an environment of wealth and power with his car executive and governor father.
Compare that to Obama who did not grow up rich by any measure.
That last thing one of Romney’s surrogates wants to press as a campaign issue is Obama’s wealth. It only emphasizes Romney’s fortune. There is no way that Romney can be portrayed as understanding the monthly struggle of paying bills.
Obama does not have to worry about that either, but his wealth has been relatively late coming. It arose from the books that he wrote.
Probably neither Romney nor Obama understands the “common man.” These are famous, wealthy and powerful individuals running for the presidency. That would be the same for anyone who is a major party nominee for president.
The real question to ponder is if Bachmann thinks before speaking. Her words are even more bewildering than usual. It will be fun watching her explain this one away.
