In 2009, Romney Favored a Presidential Requirement of Three Years of Business Experience, Which Ryan Doesn’t Have

This video is from three years ago. At that time, Romney spoke favorably of an offhand remark by a supporter who suggested that the Constitution should be changed to require that a president must “spend at least three years working in business” before becoming president.

Whether that means someone should own a business or be in management or just clerking behind a counter is not fully explained. The suggestion here is that Barack Obama has not had sufficient business experience to understand how a free enterprise economy works. While not extensive, Obama has worked in the private sector. As a teenager, he worked in a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop. As late as the 1990s, he worked as a lawyer for a private law firm. There were other private sector stints in between too.

That is not the same caliber of experience as Romney experienced, but neither does Paul Ryan have that. Ryan, like Obama, has spent the bulk of his adult life in government. Ryan does have some experience driving the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, though.

With Ryan on the ticket, don’t expect Romney to be raising the need for business experience again.
