Iranian Government’s News Agency Fooled by Onion Article

Some of the satirical stories on the internet require a double take. It is easy to be fooled because the world of politics is filled with oddities that are the truth. Usually a look at the original source will give a clue that it is satire. The Onion is an example of that. Most people know they are no more legitimate than a tabloid paper, but at least The Onion doesn’t pretend to be news.

After becoming the latest sucker in the satire world, the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars is now familiar with the Onion too. As with the Iranian government, Fars seeks to find anything that it can to embarrass the United States. When the editors at Fars thought they had found a new Gallup survey not favorable to Obama, they fell for it.

Here is the Fars headline, which has now been removed.

FarsOnion

This is a funny piece from The Onion because it is so absurd. That Fars actually believed that rural, Christian, conservative white Americans are going to prefer a fundamentalist Muslim nutball, Holocaust and 9/11 denier to Obama is really funny. Not even The Onion can top that.

A bit of critical thinking should have alerted the Fars editors. Even those who think Obama is a Nazi, socialist, Kenyan-born usurper are going to prefer him over Ahmadinejad or at least I hope so.

Hopefully, Iran’s nuclear weapons design is as competent as their news reporting. I doubt it though. The next likely nuclear power has people in positions of power who really believe that some Americans think Ahmadinejad would make a great American president.
