I am certain that this is a first. The first time that a political ad has been run against condoms. Porn stars Tera Patrick and Ron Jeremy are urging Los Angeles voters to cast their votes against Measure B.
Measure B would force porn performers to wear condoms in order to halt the transmission of HIV. As can be expected, the porn industry is not crazy about anything that involves covering up body parts. They have a point there. No one is going to buy porn made in Los Angeles that has condoms throughout its scenes (all right, maybe there aren’t any scenes in porn, because that would require a plot). The porn industry will just pack up and move somewhere else.
Jeremy says voting no on B will keep porn in California, but what he really means is Los Angeles. Pornographers could move out of state, but they might just go to San Francisco, San Diego or a surrounding city around Los Angeles.
Patrick and Jeremy do mention that porn performers are required to undergo HIV testing and STD testing every 14 to 28 days. That has kept the industry relatively free of sexually transmitted disease.
If this measure passes, it isn’t going to save a single performer’s life. It sounds more like an attempt to drive pornography away rather than address HIV infections. Whether you are for porn or against it, the fact is that is what comes with the First Amendment. In this case, condoms are just a mistaken idea to cover up what is not a significant problem.
