It took a bit of research to make sure this wasn’t dubbed, but it is legitimate. The theme to SpongeBob SquarePants is sung with gusto by the Russian military everywhere. It does have a nice marching beat, but it would seem the Russians could come up with something a bit manlier than a sponge running around in his underwear.
I can’t imagine the Soviets would ever have allowed this, even with a proper Marxist SpongeBob. I also have a hard time imaging this army as the successor to the military that fended off the Nazis. Now if only we can get al-Qaeda to march to the same beat.
Somewhere I read that the lyrics are altered in some of the marches: “Who will be the winner of the deadliest wars? SpongeBob SquarePants!”
Oddly, I have a new found respect for the Russian military. At least they have a sense of humor. Hopefully, Stalin is twirling in his grave.
