The Republican Party has leaders who are bright, like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich or Rand Paul. Their conclusions might not be agreeable, but their intelligence and awareness of the real world is not disputed. On the other side are Michele Bachmann, Georgia Rep. Paul Broun and Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert. Are they dumb? Of course not. But they look at the world with blinders and can’t seem to separate fact from what stirs in their imaginations.
The latest in that distorted thinking comes from Gohmert who has had it in his head for years that American society is under assault from Muslims, and he doesn’t mean just from a handful of terrorists. Gohmert believes the Second Amendment is needed to protect Americans from Sharia law and the inevitable assault that brings on the Constitution.
Sharia law is not threatening to undermine the Constitution, but people like Gohmert want to make it as real as a monster sleeping under the bed. The real threat comes from the narrow mindedness of people like Gohmert.
