This cannot go down well with a lot of members of the Republican Party. Meghan McCain is a big advocate of gay rights, but her mother’s public statement surprised a lot of people. But are not the McCains supposed to be a family of mavericks?

One of the most telling parts of the debate was its ending when the candidates and their wives milled around the forum greeting the crowd. John and Cindy McCain left early, while Barack and Michelle Obama worked the entire crowd. That is not especially notable, just good politics as most of those people will later be interviewed, and Obama wants them to put as positive as spin on him as possible.

The highly revealing part is in this video where Obama offers a post-debate handshake, and McCain ignores him. Fortunately, Cindy picked up the hand to prevent an awkward situation from becoming worse. That was one of the few handshakes Cindy McCain gave. While Michelle Obama leaped into old-fashioned handshake campaigning, Cindy McCain spent the post-debate walk around with her hands behind her back. She did not step into the crowd or converse much with anyone besides the main principles in the debate. The elitist tag thrown around meant something there, but it was not sticking to the Obama’s that night.

John McCain’s seven houses got him in trouble. Now his 13 cars are doing the same. The problem is McCain once said he only buys American. However, he owns a Honda sedan and a Volkswagen convertible. Aw, what the heck, he probably forgot. He will let his staffers get back to you on that one.

To a Detroit radio station, McCain said, “I’ve bought American literally all my life and I’m proud.”

Hondas and Volkswagens are good cars. Nevertheless, a little straight talking on cars would be appreciated. Then again, maybe he is being truthful. The only car registered to his name is a Cadillac. The others are in the name of Cindy McCain.

A McCain representative said the Cadillac is what McCain was referring. That might be, but it gets a little confusing when he selectively uses and then dismisses her money. McCain has used her private jet throughout the campaign because there are no limits on personal donations a candidate can put in a campaign. In that case, it is his plane too. In the case of the cars, they are hers.

However, the McCains do have seven houses. That means seven garages. It does take a few cars to fill those up.

By the way, the Obamas own one car – a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid.

You probably cannot say that, but $300,000 might do. At least that’s the estimate for the cost of the outfit she wore on opening night. Although the diamonds account for the bulk of the cost, that is still a lot of rock to wear.

Some think the outfit was a hit; others think it was money misspent. Nevertheless, it just might make Marie Antoinette proud.

One thing is clear, It raises some questions about the elitist tag the McCain campaign is trying to pin on Obama.

Just for comparison, Laura Bush’s nice-looking outfit was estimated at the less pricey $4,000. An estimate for Michelle Obama’s dress was a chain-store affordable $148.

This is odd. First, Cindy McCain gives an interview touting Sarah Palin’s foreign policy experience because Alaska is next to Russia. Here is the link to the Foolocracy article with that video.

Now, John McCain in a Charlie Gibson interview says the same thing. Here is the link to that interview.

GIBSON: But as you know, the questions revolve really around foreign policy experience.

Can you honestly say you feel confident having someone who hasn’t traveled outside the United States until last year, dealing with an insurgent Russia, with an Iran with nuclear ambitions, with an unstable Pakistan, not to mention the war on terror?

MCCAIN: Sure. And one of the key elements of America’s national security requirements are energy. She understands the energy issues better than anybody I know in Washington, D.C., and she understands. Alaska is right next to Russia. She understands that. Look, Sen. Obama’s never visited south of our border. I mean, please….So she is experienced. She’s talented. She knows how to lead and she has been vetted by the people of the state of Alaska…

GIBSON: But you criticized, for a long time, Sen. Obama…

MCCAIN: Sure.

GIBSON: … based on his lack of experience…

MCCAIN: Sure.

GIBSON: … in your words…

MCCAIN: Yes.

GIBSON: … with the foreign policy area. Jan. 6, I’m quoting you, “Sen. Obama does not have the national security experience and background to be president.”

MCCAIN: I said he didn’t…

GIBSON: Sarah Palin does?

MCCAIN: I said that he didn’t have the judgment. He doesn’t have the judgment. He didn’t have the judgment on Iraq…
